Employee onboarding in Algeria: what the first week must record
The first week decides whether payroll, access and role exist in the same place.

Employee onboarding is not a welcome email. It is the sequence that puts the new hire into the systems that decide pay, access and responsibility: payroll, the directory, the role list, and the record of what they were told. When any one of those is missing, the gap is not discovered on day one — it is discovered when something breaks that should have been tied to the person.
What must exist before the employee arrives?
Three records, not one. The contract that defines pay and start date; the role description that defines access; and the account list that defines what the employee can actually see and change. Each lives in a different system by default — HR software, a document folder, the IT directory — and onboarding is the only moment when they are forced to agree.
The failure is not missing paperwork. It is a role that does not match the contract: an employee with full access to the customer file when the contract says support only, or no access to the stock module when the job is to receive goods. Those mismatches do not correct themselves.
What should the first-day checklist cover?
The checklist is a confirmation, not a form. It asks: does the contract match the directory entry, does the directory entry match the role list, does the role list match the access the employee actually needs, and does the employee know the three things that can stop work — who approves exceptions, how to report a broken access, and where the record of the decision lives.
A checklist completed without reading each item is worse than no checklist: it produces a signed document that hides a missing entry.
Where does the onboarding record go?
Into the same system that holds payroll and roles — not a folder of scanned forms that nobody reads after week two. A scanned contract is evidence; the structured record is what the next question queries.
If the system is separate, the link between the employee identifier in HR and the identifier in access and in payroll must exist and be checked, not assumed. The check takes five minutes and is the difference between an onboarding that closes and one that drifts.
When is it safe to skip a step?
When the work is temporary and the cost of recording exceeds the cost of repeating it. A one-day contractor does not need the full sequence; what they need is a single entry that says who approved the access, for how long, and who removes it when the work ends. Without that, the temporary becomes permanent quietly.
Where this goes wrong
- The contract is filed but the role is never set. The employee starts work with the access of the last person who used that workstation.
- The role is set but the access is never checked. The employee can see everything and do nothing useful — the access is broad by default and never narrowed.
- The onboarding record is a paper form in a drawer. Six months later, nobody can confirm what was agreed.
What this does not cover
This does not define the legal requirements for contracts, social security registration or tax filings in Algeria — those are separate obligations with their own timelines, and this article assumes they are handled by the same HR process rather than replaced by it. It also does not cover training content; see training-staff-new-system for that.
